Champions League Tuesday – Preview

We’re covering two cracking Champions League games on Tuesday night on FanTeam.com, with €20,000 in guaranteed prize pool money to be won in our 6-a-side fantasy football contests.

Can anyone stop Manchester City? Will 13-time Champions Real Madrid be able to cling on? You know you’re going to watch at least one of these games, so why not add to the excitement and have a fantasy team in play also?

MANCHESTER CITY v GLADBACH

City head into this game with a 2-0 lead and Pep was frustrated that they didn’t kill off the first tie. City should have too much for Gladbach and players from both their defence and attack would make great additions to your team.

MANCHESTER CITY

Since the previous game, City has won four out of five games, scoring 14 goals in the process. However, their run of clean sheets (CS) has come to an end. Pep has heavily rotated the squad, and their main stars should be fresh for this tie. Safety Net is operating for this tournament, and you won’t need to worry about rotation.

Previous Leg: Silva picked up a goal and assist, Jesus scored the other, and Cancelo also got an assist. The out of favour Torres is still City’s top scorer in the Champions League, though with four goals. De Bruyne is their top assist man with four.

Domestic Form: Mahrez is the man in form, having recorded three goals and three assists in his last four games. Jesus has also managed three goals, but he played 90 minutes in their previous league game and there’s a chance City will play without a recognised striker, which means the Safety Net might not kick in. De Bruyne, on the other hand, was rested for the league game and has picked up two goals and an assist in his last four games.

GLADBACH

Since losing to City they’ve gone on a spiral of defeats and have lost all four games they’ve played since. Including the City game, they’ve now lost six games in a row and haven’t won for eight matches. The announcement that their manager will be leaving to Dortmund at the end of the season appears to have derailed the team. They’re languishing in 10th place in the league, and their luck is unlikely to change for this match.

Plea is their top performer in the Champions League with five goals and three assists. Gladbach aren’t solid defensively and conceded nine goals during the group stages. They’re going to have to attack City given they’re trailing by two away goals, which makes a CS highly unlikely.

Previous Leg: City shut them out.

Domestic Form: as mentioned above, they’re on a terrible run and City will just have too much for them.

Score prediction: 3-0

REAL MADRID v ATALANTA

The previous leg ended 0-1 to Real Madrid, which puts them in prime position, but there’s everything to play for with such a slim lead. Madrid has won 11 of their last 12 games against Italian opposition, however Atalanta has won their last five Champions League away games. Something has to give on the night.

REAL MADRID

Real Madrid are the masters of game management and there have been under 2.5 goals scored in the last four Champions League games for both them and Atalanta. The return of their captain (and penalty taker) Ramos will only make them stronger. Hazard might not quite be ready to start, but their top scorer Benzema should be back too.

Previous Leg: a goal in the 86th minute from Mendy thanks to a Modric assist was enough to win the game.

Domestic Form: Real has drawn two and won one since the previous leg. Fit again Benzema scored a brace in their last game.

ATALANTA

Atalanta have bounced back since their defeat and won three out of four games with their only loss coming against league leaders Inter Milan.

Previous Leg: Real shut them out and Freuler got sent off.

Domestic Form: Muriel is their top scorer and creator with 16 goals and seven assists in the league, having recorded two of each in the last four games.

Score prediction: 1-0
