Sony Open: Captain & Underdog Picks

Some food for thought from our panel

The new Underdog feature adds a twist to our Golf format. As well as your Captain choice receiving a 1.25x multiplier, so will the cheapest player (underdog) from your squad of six. With these positions taking extra importance we thought it a good idea to ask for Captain and Underdog tips from a panel of DFS Golf and FanTeam enthusiasts.

We have Jack & Mark who will be producing a weekly show on all things FanTeam Golf. If you have ever been on the FanTeam discord you will know our next guest Shaun as Smodfs, the most helpful guy around. Lastly, we have Tom, who is head of real money games at FanTeam and helped develop the game itself.

Im has not missed a cut since the memorial championship back in June 2021. In that time he has had 8 top 20 finishes, with 3 top 10s and a win in his last 4 starts. He came in tied 8th last week but was 4th in that field with strokes gained on approach, my key stat for this week. Im also ranks number one in strokes gained on Bermuda grass in the field this week making him a must play for me.

Hoge leads the field this week in my key stat of strokes gained on approach. This is no fluke either, In his last 6 events Hoge has gained 3 or more strokes on approach. Hoge has made six consecutive cuts with a tied 4th finish in that time at the RSM classic. If Hoge gets hot with the putter this week, look for him to be in or around the top 10.

He’s a great ball-striker who has historically been let down by his putting. However, on the three times he’s played this course, he’s gained strokes on the field each time. He clearly likes these greens.

He’s the ultimate underdog pick as he’ll either finish in the top 10 or won’t make the cut. With the vast majority of the field starting their season here, I’m willing to take a chance on Lebioda.

Editor – Mark’s not wrong. Lebioda had a string of 3 top ten’s in a row at the end of last year followed by a withdrawal and 6 missed cuts.

Didn’t play last week and will be fresh and has some solid course history

Has finished 13th or better in his last six starts at this event; has finished top 5 in his last three visits but sadly without a win so this could be the week for Simpson and likely to be lower owned than the popular Cameron smith

Simpson gained at least four strokes putting in each of his last three visits to Waialae; has not lost strokes on approach in eight straight starts.

Only his third time playing Waialae, and he made the cut in both of his last two visits. With finishes of 54th and 43rd

Stephen finished first on the Korn ferry tour ( 2 wins) last year gaining the points required for his tour card this year on the PGA tour, so big things can be expected of him.

I was going to say Cameron Smith but that’s too obvious, so will go with the Mexican magician Abraham Ancer. He didn’t play his best at the Sentry tournament the week previously but it could be argued this course suits him a little better and his average performance at the Sentry may make him less owned than your Smith & Simpsons.

Good approach play and putting are the key to success at The Sony and this is where Ancer excels. From his last 200 rounds, he has gained 0.39 shots per round on approach and 0.35 shots per round in putting.

It’s safe to say that Swafford enjoys himself in Hawaii. He has previously won at the Corales Puntacana Championship and is making his eighth appearance at the Sony Open. In those previous eight appearances, he has four top-25 finishes. At this price range, another top-25 would do very nicely.
