Fanteam Golf: The Farmer Insurance Open Preview

The Field

The Farmers Insurance Open takes place at the beautiful Torrey Pines in San Diego, California. This week’s field is one of the strongest you will see outside of a major. World No.1 Jon Rahm is playing and will have fond memories of this place after winning the U.S open when it was held here last year. On top of that he won this event in 2017 on his debut and was runner up in 2020. Other golfers inside the world’s top 10 include Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, and Hideki Matsuyama who recently won in Hawaii at the Sony Open. Patrick Reed won by five shots at this event last year & returns to defend his title.

The Course(s)

Similar to last week, the event will take place on multiple courses. For the first two days the field will alternate between the North Course and the South Course. We will have a cut after two rounds of play and then the final two days will be played on the South Course. Both are par 72 but the North is the shorter of the two by 500 yards and plays the easier of the two by 2-3 strokes. The South Course is brutally long at 7,765 yards.

Key stats – Driving distance, Approach, Around The Green

Due to the length of the course Driving Distance Gained is an important stat this week. It is still possible for a player to do well if they can’t hit it long but they have to be incredibly accurate. The South Course has narrow fairways and yields one of the highest missed fairway percentages on tour.
Approach is important as the South Course also has small greens, which is also why it’s important to have a good short game. The scrambling % is one of the lowest on tour at 52%

Fanteam Golf & ffstuff

You may have seen on our twitter that ffstuff is now providing stats for our golf contests. On his page you will be able to find Ownership %, Captain % and Made Cut % for both the €12 & €2 contest each week. If you play any of our contests it’s well worth heading over to his page -> When you don’t take 6/6 through to the weekend it’s always more comforting to find out you are not alone!

Please note – The tournament (and therefore our Main event) will start on Wednesday this week instead of the usual Thursday spot, to avoid a T.V. scheduling conflict with the NFL’s Conference Championship games. We hope to see you then!
