FANTEAM GOLF – AT&T PEBBLE BEACH: PREVIEW

The Field

This week it’s the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. We have a 156 player field headlined by returning champion Daniel Berger, reigning FedEx champion Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris, Jason Day, Seamus Power, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick who will be playing in his first PGA tournament of the year.

The Courses

Pebble Beach: Par 72, 6,972 yards

Spyglass Hill: Par 72, 7,041 yards

Monterey Peninsula Country Club (Shore): Par 71, 6,957 yards

This tournament will have a three-course rotation. The golfers will rotate through Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and Monterey Peninsula Country Club (Shore Course) before finishing at Pebble Beach on Sunday. The cut for this event will be after 3 days and will be the top 60 players and ties.

There is a much smaller difference in difficulty between the three courses compared to last week where we saw the North Course play up to 4 shots easier than the South. Pebble Beach plays slightly harder of the three and this is magnified on days with more wind.

Strategy

All three courses on the rotation are very short so driving distance does not factor much into consideration this week. SG On Approach is likely the stat to pay most attention to. Pebble Beach has small greens so SG Around The Green will be important on the days the players take to this course. To win this event you need to shoot a low score so putting well on the Poa greens will be needed and statistically some players fare better on these types of greens than others.
The unusual Pro-Am element is an odd one and previous results here should be taken into consideration as an indication of how players cope with this irregular format.

2022 Pebble Beach: Past Winners

  • 2021: Daniel Berger -18
  • 2020: Nick Taylor -19
  • 2019: Phil Mickelson -19
  • 2018: Ted Potter Jr. -17
  • 2017: Jordan Spieth -19

One to watch this week.

Jason Day – Last week he showed glimpses of the old Jason Day that saw him top the world golf rankings for 43 consecutive weeks back in 2015. Day was in the final group and in contention to win at Torrey Pines on Saturday before eventually coming tied 3rd. He has a fantastic record at Pebble Beach with seven top-7 finishes.
