Waste Management Phoenix Open preview + NFT partnership news and a little teaser….

The Field

This week’s field is absolutely stacked and contains six of the top ten golfers in the world, plus 17 of the top 30. The Norwegian Victor Hovland who has three wins in his last five starts is here, along with world number 1 Jon Rahm. Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama make up the rest of the players who are inside the world top 10. Brooks Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama have both won this event twice.

Jordan Spieth, Louis Oosthuizen, Daniel Berger, Sam Burns, Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Brooks Koepka, Webb Simpson, Billy Horschel, Abraham Ancer and Matt Fitzpatrick make up players inside the world’s top 30 that will be attending this week.

The Setup

We are back to a normal setup this week. No gimmicks, just 72 holes played on the same course with a 36 hole cut. Is everyone else as relieved as us?

The course is a par 71 and just over 7261 yards with Bermuda greens

Let’s face it – this is the real start of the golf season (maybe a little harsh on Torrey Pines!). No more 3rd round cuts, no more Ray Romano slowing the Pros down, just the world’s best doing what they do!

COURSE: TPC Scottsdale (Stadium), par 71, 7,261 yards.

Key stats –
SG Off The Tee
SG On Approach

With 70 bunkers and water hazards coming into play on six holes, accuracy off the tee is important.

With the course not being overly long, driving distance isn’t a must here but there does seem to be some correlation to past success here. Perhaps the ability to drive past previously mentioned hazards is one of the key reasons for this.

Expect the greens to be very firm and this could make it tricky to keep the ball on the green. This will bring scrambling ability into play.

Waste Management Phoenix Open: Past Winners

  • 2021: Brooks Koepka -19
  • 2020: Webb Simspon -17
  • 2019: Rickie Fowler -17
  • 2018: Gary Woodland. -18
  • 2017: Hideki Matsuyama -17

One to watch this week.

Jon Rahm –

Picking the world number one is not the most outlandish pick admittedly but the guy has some seriously solid history here. He’s made six appearances and has never finished outside the top 16.
This is as close to a home course you will get on the PGA Tour for Rahm who went to Arizona state university and now resides in Scottsdale. Expect plenty of the crowd to be rooting for him. It’s always a super-raucous crowd in Phoenix, can they roar the Spaniard to victory?
