GOLF SEASON-LONG WEEK 1 REVIEW

LUCK OF THE DRAW TAKES ON A NEW MEANING AT THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP!

The inaugural FanTeam Season-long golf contest got underway last week at a weather delayed Players Championship. After numerous delays with storms, and strong winds Cameron Smith finally won the event with a 13 under par total. Smith becomes the fifth Australian to win the title, joining the likes of Jason Day and Greg Norman.

Cameron Smith was just 10% owned in the season long contest and will no doubt become more popular over the coming weeks, after recording his second win of the season. Second placed Anirban Lahiri was just 1% owned and offered so much salary relief at 7.8M.

There was a significant advantage last week with the early Thursday starters, who missed the worst of the weather. The worst of that weather came on Saturday and those strong winds caused a nightmare for golfers playing that island green, par 3, hole 17. In total a record 24 balls on Saturday found the water and caused the likes of Brooks Koepka, Colin Morikawa and Xander Schauffelle to miss the cut.

With so many top golfers missing the cut, you might have found yourself behind the eight ball already, but never fear. I’ve got some picks as we prepare for the Valspar championship.

Head over to the FanTeam blog and check out the Valspar Championship preview

TRANSFERS

I personally have built my teams ready for this week’s Valspar Championship and will be rolling my transfers over, but if you are stuck at a loose end then these are the guys I would target for this week.

Colin Morikawa (13.0M)

This major winner was going along nicely at last week’s Players Championship until he got caught up in that weather on Saturday and found the water on 17, and ultimately missed the cut.

I won’t be using stats within my model from the Players championship as so much of it was just luck of the draw. With that in mind Morikawa is firmly on my mind again this week. A solid iron player who ranks first over the last 50 rounds in strokes gained on approach, my key stat this week.

Morikawa is someone worthy of consideration now as we are just 3 weeks out from the Masters at Augusta National. A major winner already who has the game to dominate in 3 weeks time as well as here this week.

Shane Lowry (9.6M)

Another major winner who was tied 13th last week and showed he really has the game for any conditions.

Lowry ranks 4th in strokes gained on approach within this field and he also ranks 17th in strokes gained around the green over the last 50 rounds. That’s key here as the last 6 winners have all ranked inside the top 20 in strokes gained around the green.

Lowry is worthy of consideration as he is likely to tee it up at the Valero Texas open in 2 weeks and use it as a warm-up before the Masters where he has 2 top 25 finishes in the last 2 years.

Francesco Molinari (8.3M)

Molinari has finally found his game again. The former British Open champion lost his way a little in 2019 after Tiger Woods hunted him down at the Masters. Molinari will come here on the back of  tied 42 finish last week.

Molinari sits inside the top 10 in strokes gained around the green and as mentioned that’s a stat that has produced the last 6 winners. He also ranks 63rd over the last 50 rounds in strokes gained on approach.

He becomes a great option down this stretch as he will be playing a lot just purely on his world ranking. He is currently scheduled to tee it up at the Valero championship and Masters championship so is worthy of consideration as a constant cut maker.
