Week 2 of the FanTeam season long golf contest is in the books, a week that saw Sam Burns go back to back at the Valspar Championship after sinking a 34 foot putt on the second playoff hole against Davis Riley.

Davis Riley was the overnight leader, with a 2 shot lead. He was looking good for the win until disaster struck on the par 5 fifth hole where he racked up a triple bogey eight! He managed to motivate himself after forcing a playoff but it was not enough to stop Sam Burns winning again.

It’s fair to say that course form holds up quite well at the Valspar. First staged in 2000, the competition has only been staged 21 times and yet Burns is now the fourth player to win it at least 2 times.

Sam Burns was 25% owned in the season long contest with Davis Riley just 1% owned so there was significant leverage to owning the later last week.

The PGA tour rolls on and this week  we head  to the Dominican Republic  for the Corales Puntacana championship. Not the most glamorous stop on the tour field wise but a chance for the tour’s future stars to shine, as well as some former major winners rediscovering their game.

Head over to the FanTeam blog and check out Corales Puntacana Championship preview.

With the top 64 golfers in the world playing the WGC Matchplay this week, you might find your season-long teams stuck in the mud. Not to worry though as I will be bringing you some strategies for the Corales and the next few weeks.

I can’t state enough how important this tool is in planning out your future weeks for the season long golf contest.

Current updates include, full Corales field, 20 confirmed golfers playing the Valero Texas Open and 50 confirmed playing The Masters. The tracker also shows you if certain golfers played the events in 2020/2021.

Golf fields are hard to predict. This week’s Corales Puntacana Championship is a prime example of that with none of the field getting announced till late last Friday evening. The good thing for our season-long teams now is we have some data and fields to work with.

We have seen 10 withdrawals from this week’s Corales Championship so I do not advocate making any changes until as late as possible.

3 golfers confirmed so far for the Corales and next week’s Valero Texas Open – Graeme McDowell (7.9M), Bill Haas (7.6M) and Kevin Chappell (8.4M).

5 golfers confirmed so far for the Valero and The Masters – Rory Mcllroy (12.8M), Corey Conners (10.5M), Abraham Ancer (11.2M), Scottie Scheffler (11.8M) and Jordan Spieth (11.6M).

I will almost certainly be transferring in some of those players mentioned above this week as we know what their schedule is. I would also want to transfer in some guys that have the potential to win these upcoming events if I could.

Corales Championship – Joel Dahmen (9.2M)

Dahmen is the reigning champion at the Corales Puntacana Championship. He clearly loves this place having played it 3 times and having 3 top 15 finishes  including last year’s win.  I think Dahmen just likes coastal tracks in general, which showed with a sixth place finish at this year’s Pebble beach pro am.

Dahmen has just one missed cut all year which came at the Farmers Insurance Open and with his course history here he is an easy transfer to consider this week.

Valero Open – Jordan Spieth (11.6M)

Jordan Spieth just loves playing in his home state of Texas and that showed with his 2 stroke win here last year. Spieth season normally starts around here as he gets ready for the Masters and I wouldn’t be surprised if he added to his excellent course history with another win, despite his current swing issues. The great thing is if we bring him in here we can use him at the Masters.

Spieth does come with some volatility with 2 missed cuts on the year but when he got on a track he liked at Pebble Beach he finished second. The Valero is a track he clearly likes so he is easy to consider for this week.

The Masters – Patrick Cantlay (13.6M)

I have been on Patrick Cantlay for the Masters for a few months now and for good reason. Augusta National is a course you need to play multiple times to compete on or even win. The reason being are the high elevation greens and there’s just certain places you can miss here if you are going to. All of this only comes from playing it and Cantlay has now played it 6 times with 2 top 20 finishes in 2020 and 2019.

Cantlay has been playing some lights out golf this season with just one missed cut at the Players Championship. I don’t take much away from this as it’s a course he clearly does not like and the weather delays could not have helped anyone. He has the history around Augusta and is an easy transfer to consider for this week.

A hard reset! If you had asked me at the start of the week I would have said no way not this week, but after looking into some stats and knowing some of the upcoming fields I don’t hate it.

If you look at the recent winning scores at this week’s Corales championship compared to the Masters then we look set to have a higher fantasy points week at the Corales compared to Augusta, with the potential of more birdies and eagles.

Corales Winning Scores

2016 – 24 under

2017 – 20 under

2018 – 18 under

2019 – 18 under

2020 – 18 under

2021 – 12 under

Masters Winning Scores

2016 – 5 under

2017 – 9 under

2018 – 15 under

2019 – 13 under

2020 – 20 under (Played In November)

2021 – 10 under

This week’s Corales Puntacana championship will be the weakest field on the season-long contest so wildcarding here could give you a huge jump on the field.

It is worth noting that the only player’s in the Masters field playing here this week are Hudson Swafford (8.2M)  and Danny Willett (8.2M) so if I pull the trigger both  will most certainly be in my lineup. I would want to pad my bench spots out with guys playing the Masters and preferably the Valero so  Rory Mcllroy (12.8M) and Jordan Spieth (11.6M) fit that criteria.

If any of my lineups have 4 guys playing this week already I do not advocate using the wildcard.
