The PGA Tour moves on to San Antonio this week with the Valero Texas Open. The Masters is only one week away and this event attracts some of the top golfers as they try to find form before Augusta. After the field being split last week between the WGC Matchplay and the Corales Championship, it’s pleasing to return to a more traditional tournament.
WHAT IS PLAYER MATCHUPS?
Player matchups is an exciting FanTeam game that enables players to bet on between 3 and 10, designated 1 – vs – 1 fantasy matchups, with the potential to win up to 500X your stake.
Player matchups essentially act as a fantasy football accumulator, in which the payout increases the more matchups the user bets on. The great thing with FanTeam player matchups is that you are betting against the house rather than thousands of other players.

HOW I PICK MY PLAYER MATCHUPS
I find player matchups are a great accompaniment to playing the DFS contests. I’ve already done my research on which players I like on the course and I have rankings based on that.
Using these rankings, I look at the available Player Matchups on FanTeam and spot any major differences. These become the starting point for my picks.
VALERO TEXAS OPEN PLAYER MATCHUPS PICKS
Once again, this is a second stroke course as TPC San Antonio has tiered greens which places more importance on ball placement. Included in my model this week are Strokes gained approach from 100 yards, Par 4 and 5 Scoring, Strokes gained putting, and Fantasy Points gained.
Below are my three favourite player matchups for the Valero Texas Open. The number in brackets is the rank of each player in my model.
MATTHIAS SCHWAB (14) VS ANIRBAN LAHIRI (109)
My first choice for player matchups this week is Matthias Schwab
My ranking for Lahiri might seem odd considering he came 2nd at the Players Championship. However, statistically speaking that was an outlier in his season so far and the general chaos of that event means I’m dismissing it.
In the previous six outings this year, Lahiri has lost strokes on approach in five of them. This is the most important stat this week so that makes me confident picking anyone against him.
Conversely, Matthias Schwab has gained strokes on approach in every measured round so far this year. He’s also finished T7 in two of his last three starts.
ADAM HADWIN (19) VS JASON DAY (66)
My second choice for player matchups this week is Adam Hadwin
Adam Hadwin has finished 7th & 9th in his last two starts. Jason Day has missed the cut in both.
Hadwin has a positive number in the strokes gains approach category over the last 24 rounds. Day is negative.
In summary, there’s not much to like about Jason Day in this matchup. I’ll confidently take Adam Hadwin.
ABRAHAM ANCER (10) v BRYSON DECHAMBEAU (49)
My third choice for player matchups this week is Abraham Ancer
Where do we start with Bryson DeChambeau? He’s barely played this year and when he has, he’s been erratic. There is nothing in his form or stat profile that gives me any confidence in him going into this week.
Whereas Abraham Ancer is a player I feel is finding form at the right time. His approach play and putting have improved as the year has gone on and he’s coming into this week with confidence after a top-five finish last week at the Matchplay. This course suits his iron play and I expect him to be contending for the win this week.
I hope this article has given you plenty of food for thought – especially for those of you that have not played Player Matchups before, but want to give it a go.
Player Matchups can be played across a variety of sports including, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Golf and Cricket.
Best of luck to everyone entering – I look forward to seeing those winning slips.
