MEXICO OPEN GOLF PLAYER MATCHUPS
Normal service resumed on the PGA Tour with the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta in, surprisingly, Mexico. It’s a full field event with a cut after two rounds. This is the first time the PGA has hosted an event here although the Mexico Open has been running for decades. This means we have no course history stats or course form to base our picks on. I have created a model which I use as a foundation for my plays but it’s really more art than science this week.
WHAT IS PLAYER MATCHUPS?
Player matchups is an exciting FanTeam game that enables players to bet on between 3 and 10, designated 1 – vs – 1 fantasy matchups, with the potential to win up to 500X your stake.
Player matchups essentially act as a fantasy football accumulator, in which the payout increases the more matchups the user bets on. The great thing with FanTeam player matchups is that you are betting against the house rather than thousands of other players.

WHY DO I LIKE PLAYER MATCHUPS?
The reason I love player matchups aside from the obvious cash rewards is just the fact it’s a simple way to apply my fantasy knowledge without the need to build or manage a fantasy roster.
The simplicity of matchups means all I have to assess is how well I think certain players/teams will perform that week and just bet on the guys/teams I like, rather than managing transfers/rosters etc.
The great thing with FanTeam is that I can bet on player matchups, along with playing daily fantasy and betting outrights all under one app.
MEXICO OPEN PLAYER MATCHUPS PICKS
Even though we have no historic stats, we do know the layout of the course and we can make assumptions on what sort of golfers it should favour. It’s only a Par 71 but it’s one of the longest courses on the PGA Tour. This indicates that driving distance is an important stat when picking players. The fairways are wide so driving accuracy shouldn’t be so important.
Also, this is normally a recreational course for holidaymakers which means, even with the added length, it shouldn’t be too challenging for PGA professionals. Because of this, I’m also heavily weighing Birdies or Better in my model.

Here are my picks for this week:
KRAMER HICKOCK VS TYLER DUNCAN
My first choice for player matchups this week is Tyler Duncan.
This is an example of what I talked about earlier. Duncan and Hickok are not that far apart in my model this week but when I delve into the figures, Duncan stands out as a great play. He’s 6th in the field in weighted strokes gained over the last 20 rounds and he’s positive across all categories. Hickok is negative in the same period and is mainly red across the different categories.
This one is an easy pick for me to start our matchups lineup.
WYNDHAM CLARK VS SCOTT STALLINGS
My second choice for player matchups this week is Wyndham Clark.
I think that driving distance is going to be crucial this week and Clark is in the top 3 of this field. Normally he’s a streaky player who has the ability to crash and burn when you least expect it but he’s made 4 cuts in the row. Probably the main reason I like him though is that he’s going up against Scott Stallings. He’s slumped after a good stretch and he’s succeeding in statistical categories that appear to be unimportant on this course.
Clark should have too much for Stallings here.
SAHITH THEEGALA VS KEVIN STREELMAN
My third choice for player matchups this week is Kevin Streelman.
Despite missing the cut last time out, Streelman is green across all categories for the last 20 rounds. He had three top 22s before that missed cut and has been fairly consistent. Theegala seems to have faded since his 7th at the Valero Open and is heading in the wrong direction both in form and stats.
I’m fairly confident that Streelman will outscore Theegala.
