TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND SCHEDULE
Preliminary round May 13-24
Quarterfinals May 26th
Semifinals May 28th
Final May 29th
The 16 teams are divided into two groups of 8 teams, Each team will play each other in their group in a single round-robin match with the top 4 teams from each group advancing to the Quarterfinals
GROUP A BREAKDOWN
Group A looks like the weaker group on paper with Canada, Switzerland and Germany looking like the standout teams in this group.
Canada’s recent record in the world championships is certainly impressive boasting 3 titles,2 runners up finishes and a quarter-final appearance. off course team Canada has a host of top NHL stars to call upon.
Switzerland has a couple of second-place finishes to their name over the last ten years, not so many NHL players to call upon as most of their talent is based around Europe but they do look good enough to get to the quarter finals.
Germany looks best of the rest in group A and should also qualify for the knockout stages. Having a couple of fourth-place finishes in 2010 and 2021 the bearers of the eagle (nickname) could cause a few surprises this time around
GROUP B TEAMS TO WATCH
Much tougher group this one with the tournament favourites and hosts Finland expected to make a good run at the championship. the 3 times winners of this event 1995,2011 & 2019 are looking to make it number four and should have no trouble qualifying from group B.
Sweden and the Czech Republic look the main threats to the hosts.
Let’s start with Sweden who are 11 times world champions so can’t be taken lightly and with a host of top NHL stars to call upon and will not be any pushover.
The Czech Republic national team are 6 times world champions but haven’t tasted success since the 2010 tournament so a deep run in this year’s event will be more than welcome.
And with team USA also in this group fireworks are guaranteed.
