This week the PGA Tour heads on down to TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas for the AT&T Byron Nelson. TPC Craig Ranch will host the Byron Nelson tournament for the second straight year.

This is the second time that TPC Craig Ranch will host this historic event after being held at Trinity Forest Golf Club from 2014 to 2019 and The Tournament Players course before that at Four seasons.

Scoring conditions are set to be easier this week compared to last week’s TPC Potomac Wells Fargo Championship if last year’s results are anything to go by. So we should be in for an exciting birdie fest week.

This event normally struggles with its field but with next week’s PGA Championship (golf’s second major) has caught a lucky break.

The world number one Scottie Scheffler is joined in a top heavy field with 8 other golfers inside the top 20 including Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Sam Burns, Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama, Joaquin Niemann and Brooks Koepka.

2021 champion KH Lee is in the field and will be hoping to retain his title he won 12 months ago. He is joined by other AT&T Byron Nelson champions including Sung Kang, Aaron Wise, Brendon Todd, Jason Dufner, Jason Day, Rory Sabbatini and Adam Scott.

Ryan Palmer, a Dallas native owns a membership at this golf course, joins a 150 man field. A stacked field and another exciting week of golfing action for us to sink our teeth into.

The tournament will begin on 12th May and run through to May 15th.

TPC Craig Ranch

Yardage: 7,438

Par: 72

Greens: Bentgrass

Comp Courses: TPC Scottsdale, TPC Twin Cities, Vidanta Vallarta and PGA West

TPC Craig Ranch first opened in 2004.Former professional golfer Tom Weiskopf is its designer and the 16 time former PGA Tour winner who won the 1973 British open has an impressive resume of golf courses he has designed including TPC Scottsdale.

TPC Craig Ranch works its way around Rawlett Creek which can be seen on around 13 holes. Unfortunately the creek does not offer much of a problem for the golfers with only really wayward tee shots likely to find it. It does guard the green on hole 3 should any golfer dare go for the green, most will lay up though.

The golf course itself despite the yardage doesn’t play particularly long and it has a usual array of par 3, par 4 and par 5’s. All 4 par 5’s are reachable in 2 and yielded around 12% of eagles in 2021. The course also features a driveable par 4.

The course doesn’t offer much in defense outside of weather with wide expansive fairways and very little rough. The bunkers are bland compared to what we have had these last few weeks and offer up very little defense.

Strokes Gained Approach

Strokes Gained Total

Birdies or better gained

Strokes gained on approach are always a key stat to look at and none more so than here. While TPC Craig Ranch does not offer much protection off the tee outside the weather it does around the greens, especially with that Creek in view. Last year’s winner here KH Lee ranked second in strokes gained on approach and back on the Korn Ferry tour in 2008, Marc Leishman and Webb Simpson ranked inside the top 5 as they both finished inside the top 10 of the leaderboard.

Strokes gained total is worth a look this week as mentioned it’s going to be a birdie fest. KH Lee was first in this metric in 2021 when he won and James Hahn who was second in the Korn Ferry Tour event here in 2012 ranked first in this metric. The players simply must gain strokes all over this week to compete so strokes gained total should be factored into your models heavily.

The scoring is going to be very low this week if last year’s anything to go by where winner KH Lee ran out winner at 25 under par. Birdie making is a key stat to look at based on last year’s scoring with 6 players finishing 20 under par or better. Players simply must make birdies to compete or make the cut here and that showed with last year’s cut being at 5 under par on Friday.

This week’s forecast calls for record high temperatures in the 90’s, a far cry to what we had last week. The high temperatures should have the golf course playing firmer so expect another 20 under or better from this year’s winner.
