MLS Gameweek 18
Gameweek 18 of the MLS season is upon us, and I’m here as ever to give my take on the upcoming week’s slate on FanTeam. Gameweek 17 threw up some unexpected results but it is something we have got used to in this MLS season. 10 games to look at this week with 11 players needed for the slate.
The Main Event contest runs through June 25th
This week’s Main Event contest has 2 buy-ins of €2 and €15 respectively. The €2 contest has a prize pool of €200 and the €15 has a prize pool of €600.
The rules are simple to follow. You will be required to pick 11 players to fill out your squad whilst staying within a budget of 108.0m. For each team you enter, you must select a captain and a vice-captain. Your captain will score 2x points. However, if your captain does not play, your vice-captain will then score 2x points.
You can select a maximum of 3 players from the same team. It is worth noting that if you select two or more defensive players from the same team (GK and DEF), and the team keeps a clean sheet, a stacking penalty will apply.
No bench is required in this contest, folks. Instead, you have the innovative safety net feature to fall back on! This means if you have a player who does not start, your player will be replaced at the beginning of the match. This is dependent on a player being available from the same team, at the same price or less. The closest price to your player value will be automatically selected.
Standard FanTeam scoring applies to this contest.
With the rules covered, let’s take a look at some of my picks from each game, shall we?
Seattle Sounders Vs Sporting Kansas City – 20.00BST
Seattle is slowly creeping up the Western Conference and are 4 games unbeaten at home since they started focusing on the MLS. Sporting Kansas are still hit and miss but can turn over any team on their day as they showed last week away to Nashville. Raul Ruidaz (11.8M) was injured last weekend and looks set to miss this weekend also, meaning Nicolas Lodeiro (11.3M) is the talisman for Seattle this week and is someone I will be looking to get into my teams. Sporting will be on a high after their victory away to Nashville, Daniel Salloi (7.1M) was back in the lineup after suspension which was a much-needed boost. Johnny Russel (6.9M) is another option also if you feel Sporting can get something here. The last 7 meetings between the two have produced both teams to score so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happened here.
DC United Vs Nashville – 22.00BST
DC is currently 5 without a win and faces a Nashville side who will be licking their wounds from last week’s home defeat. Nashville is no mugs away from home and could add to DC’s misery here. As ever the main 2 guys for Nashville remain Hany Mukhtar (8.8M) and Charles Sapong (8.2M) For DC they will need Taxiarchis Fountas (9.6M) and Ola Kamara (9M) to find their form here to get something from this game. Personally feel there is better value on the slate. These sides have met 3 times in the MLS and DC has yet to get a victory, could this weekend be the time?
CF Montreal Vs Charlotte – 00.30BST
Montreal was in red hot form, but have now only got 1 win in 4 and is struggling, this hasn’t been helped with Djordje Mihailovic (11.9M) picking up an injury. They face a Charlotte side who haven’t lost since sacking their manager and will be looking to pick something up here. Ben Bender (7.2M) is the form player in this Charlotte side who could well be without Karol Swiderski (7.4M) again this weekend. These 2 met earlier in the season and Montreal was 2-0 winners in that one. They will be hoping for more of the same here. A tight game could be in the cards here and is a hard game to predict based on form.
Toronto FC Vs Atlanta United – 00.30BST
Both these teams will be coming into this game thinking the points are here for the taking, both are in mixed form with Toronto slowly improving. This will be the last game Toronto has before they welcome Lorenzo Insigne. Atlanta welcomed back Josef Martinez (10.4M) last week and it didn’t take him long to get back on the scoresheet. If he stays fit then Atlanta will have a great second half of the season and he will no doubt feature a lot for me. Luiz Araujo (9.5M) grabbed a goal and an assist last weekend and could be a good play here. Toronto will be looking at Jesus Jimenez (9.4M) to get back to scoring the goals needed to get back to winning ways. If he plays I do like the look of Ayo Akinola (8.3M) he grabbed a couple of goals midweek in the cup and could be a lower-owned option here this week. Games between these 2 are hard to predict but I do feel goals will be the order of play here.
Houston Dynamo Vs Chicago Fire – 01.00BST
Chicago got their first win in 11 games last weekend and will be hoping that they can use that here to try and get something from a Houston team who are very hit and miss. Houston is quite strong at home and this is helped by Sebastian Ferreira (10.4M) who has 6 goals and 3 assists this season and will be licking his lips here against Chicago. As mentioned, Chicago did grab a much-needed victory last week, but from a DFS point of view, they are not very reliable, apart from Shaqiri (7.8M). Chicago has won the last 2 meetings between the 2 but I do fancy Houston here at home.
Inter Miami Vs Minnesota – 01.00BST
Miami’s good form was halted last weekend falling to defeat at Atlanta but being back at home where they are unbeaten in their last 5 games they will be looking to bounce back. Minnesota has lost their last 2 games but will be hoping they can get something from this game. Leonardo Campana (10.1M) is still keeping Gonzalo Higuain (9.7M) out the side and often finds the net when playing at home. Minnesota will be pleased that Luis Amarilla (8.1M) got 90 minutes under his belt last weekend and will need him here to help take something from this game. Emanuel Reynoso (8.2M) could also be a nice play here if you fancy Minnesota to get something. This will be the first time these 2 have met in the MLS but Miami will be hoping their home form continues.
Austin FC Vs FC Dallas – 02.00BST
3rd in the Western Conference vs 4th, and possibly the game of the slate. Austin grabbed a much-needed win last weekend after having a mini blip. Dallas will be furious with themselves after yet another defeat vs Vancouver last week which was not what i expected. Maximiliano Urruti (10.3M) is quietly going about his business and grabbed his 5th goal of the season last weekend and will be hoping to add to that here. He comes up against Jesus Ferreira (9.5M) who is still the league’s top goal scorer but has failed to find the net in his last 4 games. Dallas has improved away from home whereas Austin has had a slump at home. These 2 have met 3 times in the MLS and Dallas has won all 3. Will they make it 4?
Real Salt Lake Vs Columbus Crew – 03.00BST
Real Salt Lake is sitting 2nd in the Western Conference and is one of the inform teams in the MLS. They have yet to lose at home this season also. Zac MacMath (8.5M) is my go-to goalkeeper this week, he has kept 2 clean sheets in his last 2 home games also. Let’s hope he can make it a 3rd. Attacking wise Real Salt Lake shares out the goals and assists which isn’t helpful from a DFS point of view. Columbus, like a few others on this slate, is a bit hit and miss but did grab a victory on their last away outing against Atlanta. However, they are going to need to be in top form to get something here. Erik Hurtado (6.1M) has 2 goals in his last 2 games and is starting to nail down a regular starting place in this team The away team in this fixture has not won since 2011.
Portland Timbers Vs Colorado Rapids – 03.30BST
Both these sides are not having the best of seasons. Portland has only won 3 games all season and is the draw specialists of the Western Conference. Colorado just can’t win away from home, 8 games this season away from home without a win. Will this weekend be the 9th time lucky? Or will it be a draw? Portland will need Sebastian Blanco (10.2M) to add to his 6 assists and 2 goals if they are to take the victory here. Colorado will need Diego Rubio (8.7M) fit here to try and get something. Games between the 2 usually are tight games and I expect the same here with both looking to kick start their seasons.
As this contest allows multi entries, I will likely be entering different lineups. Here’s an example of one of my lineups I will be entering using some of the players mentioned.
