MLS Gameweek 19 is here, with a midweek slate to get our teeth stuck into. 7 games to look at here and with midweek games in the MLS the potential for some squad rotation. Gameweek 18 was one for the home teams with only 1 away the weekend on the slate. Here is my take of this midweek slate and what players to consider for your teams
The Main Event contest runs through June 30th
This week’s Main Event contest has 2 buy-ins of €2 and €15 respectively. The €2 contest has a prize pool of €100 and the €15 has a prize pool of €400. BOTH PRIZEPOOLS ARE PROGRESSIVE.
The rules are simple to follow. You will be required to pick 11 players to fill out your squad whilst staying within a budget of 108.0m. For each team you enter, you must select a captain and a vice-captain. Your captain will score 2x points. However, if your captain does not play, your vice-captain will then score 2x points.
You can select a maximum of 3 players from the same team. It is worth noting that if you select two or more defensive players from the same team (GK and DEF), and the team keeps a clean sheet, a stacking penalty will apply.
No bench is required in this contest, folks. Instead, you have the innovative safety net feature to fall back on! This means if you have a player who does not start, your player will be replaced at the beginning of the match. This is dependent on a player being available from the same team, at the same price or less. The closest price to your player value will be automatically selected.
Standard FanTeam scoring applies to this contest.
With the rules covered, let’s take a look at some of my picks from each game, shall we?
Cincinnati Vs New York City – 00.30 BST
New York comes into this game on the back of a defeat away to top-of-the-table Philadelphia and will be hoping to get back to winning ways here. Cincinnati is 2 games unbeaten and is a team that either wins or loses. These 2 sides have met 6 times in the MLS with NYCFC winning all 6 encounters. Valentin Castellanos (11.2M) grabbed a goal at the weekend to take his tally for the season to 8. Talles Magno (11.1M) is another option to look at to get on your side. 5 assists and 3 goals for the midfielder so far this season. For Cincinnati I usually go for Brandon Vazquez (8.8M), however, his striker partner Brenner (7.2M) is starting to have an impact on this Cincinnati team.
Toronto Fc Vs Columbus Crew – 00.30 BST
Besides their defeat to the Red Bulls, Toronto seems to have found a bit of form and will be hoping to continue with that here. Columbus themselves come here on the back of 3 without defeat and will be looking to take something from this one. The history between the 2 teams suggests the home team usually gets the points here. Pozuelo (9.4M) and Jonathan Osorio (9M) will need to pull the strings from the midfield if Toronto wants to win. Columbus has a few injury doubts, however, Darlington Nagbe (8.6M) could be someone to try and get into your side if you fancy Columbus getting something here.
Chicago Fire Vs Philadelphia Union – 01.00 BST
Chicago didn’t capitalize on their victory in their last home fixture after falling to defeat at the weekend. They face a Philadelphia side who are in great form and are back top of the Eastern Conference. In the last 4 meetings between the 2, Chicago has not got the 3 points and I struggle to see how they will be here also. If they are to get something here they will need Kacper Przybylko (8.6M) to find his scoring boots. The prices of the Philadelphia players in this one could see me going with a full stack of Philly players. Daniel Gazdag (8M), Alejandro Bedoya (7.3M), Mikael Uhre (7.2M), and Andre Blake (6.5M) could all be of great value for your sides in this game.
Seattle Sounders Vs CF Montreal – 03.00 BST
This could be a game of the slate in terms of goals. Seattle is showing great form and is currently 4 unbeaten, however, they do have a few injuries and do have a tendency to rotate in certain areas. C. C Roldan (10.7M) grabbed a goal at the weekend and an assist and is a threat again this week. Jordan Morris (10.1M) also grabbed a goal and assist and both will be looking to continue this form here. Montreal is in shaky form but grabbed a much-needed win at the weekend to keep them 3rd in the Eastern Conference. Romell Quioto (6.9M) got himself a goal and assist too and will be needed here to take something from this Seattle team.
Los Angeles FC Vs FC Dallas – 03.00 BST
Before I get into this game, LAFC signed Gareth Bale at the beginning of the week and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do in the MLS. He joins an LAFC side sitting top of the Western Conference, they face a Dallas side who can’t seem to get a run going and have slipped to 4th in the Western conference. Carlos Vela (12.8M) will be looking to show his manager that Bale isn’t needed in this team, and despite not finding the net in a while did grab an assist at the weekend, and will be hoping to do more here. Ryan Hollingshead (9.9M) if he starts will be a great option for your defense this week, he has 4 goals and 2 assists from the defense this season and that’s without being a regular starter recently. Dallas will need both Paul Arriola (7.9M) and Jesus Ferreira (8.1M) to be on form here to get something and take it back to Dallas. LAFC usually gets the better of Dallas when they meet but I expect this to be a close game.
LA Galaxy Vs Minnesota – 03.30 BST
The Galaxy come into this game refreshed after their weekend game was moved, they will be looking to use that here to keep their mini-run going. Minnesota has lost their last 3 games and will need to do something here to get a result to end that run. Jonathan Bond (9.7M) could be a great option to have for a goalkeeper this week, Minnesota isn’t big scorers and i expect them to struggle here too. Robin Lod (7.6M) and Emanuel Reynoso (7.4M) are your best options for Minnesota if you feel they can bounce back here. The game earlier in the season ended 1-1 and I do expect a tight game here also.
Portland Timbers Vs Houston Dynamo – 03.30 BST
Both these sides come into this game on the back of a win at the weekend, both also keeping a rare clean sheet. Portland will be pleased that they are the home side here as the away side has not won this fixture since 2017. Houston also isn’t great away from home this season. Jaroslaw Niezgoda (10.4M) got back to scoring ways at the weekend with a brace and will be hoping he can continue that form here. Bill Tuiloma (8.5M) is another goal-scoring defender and is a great option here with a potential clean sheet too. Darwin Quintero (7.1M) is slowly getting back to fitness after an injury and has yet to complete 90 minutes in his last 6 games, however when he goes play a longer period of time he usually produces either a goal or assist and will be needed here if Houston wants to get back to back wins.
As this contest allows multi entries, I will likely be entering different lineups. Here’s an example of one of my lineups I will be entering using some of the players mentioned.
